Self-refer for hearing or speech-language services

You can self-refer for many services without a doctor's referral. If you or someone you know needs help with hearing or speech-language, please contact us.

When we get your referral, our team will look at it and add you to the wait list.

A doctor's referral is needed for the following services:

  • Balance testing
    • Must be referred by an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist or neurologist.
  • Pediatric swallowing services
    • Must be referred by a physician.
  • Adult swallowing services
    • Must be referred by a physician or nurse practitioner.
  • Adult voice services (not including gender-affirming voice services)
    • Must be referred by an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist.

Cerumen management (Ear wax removal)

Currently, Hearing and Speech Nova Scotia does not offer cerumen management (ear wax removal). Audiologists licensed by the Nova Scotia Regulator of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (NSRASLP) or persons authorized to fit or sell hearing aids can perform cerumen management services.

Find a list of licensed audiologists authorized to perform cerumen management: Search licensed audiologists - NSRASLP

You can also search the internet for "ear wax removal near me".

Hearing aids

Hearing and Speech Nova Scotia does not sell hearing aids but we can help you understand what to look for when purchasing a hearing aid. An audiologist can help by conducting a thorough hearing test and give you professional advice about whether or not a hearing aid or assistive device is the right treatment. Search for ‘a hearing aid dealer near me’ to find a list of hearing aid practitioners in your area.

We understand that hearing aids can be expense. Refer to the hearing aid assistance brochure for a list of possible funding sources to assist you in purchasing hearing aids.

Speech-language services for school-age children

School-age children are covered by the Nova Scotia Department of Education Early Childhood Development. You can contact the child's school to ask about speech-language services.

If you are interested in private (fee-based) speech and language services, the Nova Scotia Regulator of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists (NSRASLP) has a list of SLPs by age group and region. You can find this list on the NSRASLP website: Search Speech Language - Member Roster - NSRASLP.

Speech-language services for home schooled children

If your child is registered as home-schooled with the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD), you can access speech and language services with Hearing & Speech Nova Scotia.

This is a consultative service, where the SLP provides guidance and support to the parent educator, who will then carry out the strategies at home. The SLP will offer advice, resources, and coaching.

Call 902-492-8201 for information.
